**Many years after this championship, it was pointed out that when several Japanese lifters had initially been awarded National Championship titles at the 1963 Nationals, several US athletes and officials protested the admittance of non-citizens (these were lifters from Japan who were initially approved to lift but had literally stepped of a plane a few days before the event). Subsequently, the lifters from the US who initially placed second in the affected categories, were awarded the title of National Champion. This was done in the case of Joe Pitman as well, as he had placed second in 1958 to Mr. Onuma, who was also from Japan.
